In a bid to encourage
Emirati participation in the healthcare industry and the private sector, the
University of Sharjah's College of Medicine has appointed Dr. Shamsheer
Vayalil, Chairman and Managing Director, VPS Healthcare, as an advisory board
member.
Currently less than 2,500 Emiratis work in the UAE's healthcare sector, primarily as doctors and nurses. With the UAE healthcare sector poised to grow to 103 billion dirhams by 2021, the industry will increasingly require local talent to be available to meet its growth ambitions.
Speaking on his appointment, Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, said, "The University of Sharjah and the College of Medicine have played a vital role in developing talented individuals into the nation's future leaders. I am grateful to be appointed to this role, and I look forward to working with my fellow Advisory Board members, to contribute to the future of healthcare in the UAE, and encourage increased participation of Emiratis across the healthcare ecosystem."
Already recognised as a regional leader for health services and medical tourism, the emergence of the UAE as a beacon of medical education and research will encourage the supply of talent to meet the industry's growth requirements. Aligned to this, the College of Medicine is committed to becoming an academic centre of excellence through its flagship courses, medical research and clinical training.
The University of Sharjah was established in
1997 by H.H. Shaikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, to
meet the Emirate's educational needs. Over the years the university has grown
to become the preferred choice of Emirati students within the UAE. The
University has a total of 14 colleges, which offer 94 programs at the bachelors,
masters, doctoral and diploma levels. The College of Medicine provides degrees
in medicine and surgery, molecular medicine, and health education.
